Addressing Social ChallengesMethamphetamine abuse is having devastating effects in Wyoming. Users suffer significant health problems, and even death, and are more likely to commit violent crime, domestic violence and child abuse. Through engagement with elected local and state leaders, Marathon learned that methamphetamine use is one of the most serious social challenges facing Wyoming. As evidence, Wyoming officials cited the high number of job vacancies caused by applicants failing drug screenings. To help address this challenge, in 2006 Marathon developed a methamphetamine awareness and education program for employees and contractors. The information was presented at a Company-sponsored community events where a certified safety professional and consultant gave an overview of methamphetamine use and impacts. With its large stake in Wyoming, Marathon is prepared to work with communities and state legislators to tackle the issue. In 2007, the Company will initiate methamphetamine awareness programs for employees across its business enterprise and make a presentation to federal agencies in Washington, D.C. |
