Marathon operates three natural gas fields in the Irish Celtic Sea and holds an interest in a gas development project off the northwest coast.

Marathon was the first company to discover and produce commercial quantities of natural gas in Ireland. Marathon's regional office is located in Cork, on the southern coast of Ireland.

Cork is the second largest city in the Republic of Ireland, and is an important seaport with one of the world's largest natural harbors. Visitor attractions in Cork include Blarney Castle, and Cork is easily accessible from the rest of Ireland by ferry and plane. The River Lee flows through the city, with an island in the river forming the main part of the city center.
